AWARDS & SCHOLARSHIPS
IBNA names its annual scholarship in honor of the late Grant Price—a Jack Shelley award winner; former news director of WMT-TV, Cedar Rapids; retired Vice President of News and Public Affairs for KWWL-TV, Waterloo; and professor emeritus of Communication Arts at Wartburg College in Waverly. The scholarship amount is $1,000.00.
Eligibility: Applicants for the Grant Price Scholarship must be registered in good standing at a two-year or four-year college or university in Iowa, and hold either freshman or sophomore standing. The scholarship is designed to recognize outstanding promise at an early career stage. The recipient will be announced at the IBNA convention May 1, 2010 in Cedar Rapids.
Requirements: To apply for the Grant Price Scholarship, students must complete the application form, compile three news writing samples (NO discs), supply two letters of recommendation (one of which must be from the student's academic adviser), and write a one page statement of their goals in electronic media journalism.
The IBNA Dick Petrik Outstanding Student Award is given annually to a college student whose work shows outstanding potential for a career in electronic media journalism. The award is named for the late Dick Petrik, longtime news director at KOEL Radio in Oelwein. This honor carries with it a monetary award of $500.00.
Eligibility: Applicants for the Petrik Award must be registered in good standing at a four-year college or university in Iowa, and hold either junior or senior standing. The recipient will be announced at the IBNA convention May 1, 2010 in Cedar Rapids.
Requirements: Entrants must submit no more than three taped examples of their work during college. These may include newscasts in which the entrant participated, packages, interview programs or segments, material gathered in the field, etc. The student's participation must be made clear. If the tapes can not make the entrant’s participation clear, written material must be attached to verify it. Entries may (but are not required to) include both radio and television examples. Submit no more than two discs—one audio CD and one DVD. Discs must be clearly labeled with the entrant's name and college address. Entrants must complete the enclosed form, and submit two letters of recommendation from persons familiar with their broadcast work (such as a news director or college adviser).
