Nikki Newbrough, Grant Price and Lauren Squires

Nikki Newbrough of Wartburg College has been chosen as the recipient of the 2008 Grant Price Scholarship and
Lauren Squires of Loras College has been chosen as the recipient of the 2008 Dick Petrik Outstanding Student Award
Newbrough is a sophomore from Montour, Iowa. She is currently majoring in communication arts with concentrations in electronic media and public relations.
The Price scholarship amount is $1,000.00 and is designed to recognize outstanding promise at an early career stage.
Squires is a senior media studies major from Cedar Rapids, and is the daughter of Jeff and Michele Squires.
The Petrik Outstanding Student Award is given annually to a college junior or senior whose work shows outstanding potential for a career in electronic media journalism.
Newbrough active in student media
Newbrough served as a Wartburg Television sports anchor during the 2007-2008 academic year and was one of three Wartburg students who traveled to Northern Illinois University after the tragic shootings there this spring to report on student reaction.
Newbrough also served as promotions director and morning show host for the Wartburg College radio station, KWAR. This summer, Newbrough will be an intern at KWWL News Channel 7 in Waterloo; during summer 2007, she worked at KFJB-AM/KXIA-FM in Marshalltown.
“I have a passion for getting the story and informing the public. This is what I want to be doing for the rest of my life. I want people to be able to listen to my story and trust what I am saying. I want to look back at what I did and know that I made a difference,” Newbrough said.
Squires already an agressive journalist
Craig Schaefer, professor of media studies, said of Squires, “Lauren has a passion to find the stories that need to be told wherever they are and she gets them. She never sits back.
In 2007, Squires won awards for news photography, in-depth series, excellence in writing and sports coverage from the Iowa Broadcast News Association.
