Veteran weatherman baffled by heavy rains

By Andrew Nostvick, Wartburg College

Former KWWL chief meteorologist Craig Johnson has been in the weather business for 30 years and has experienced strange weather in his career, but has never seen weather like we had in May and June.

“It's been unusual to have this much rain,” Johnson said.

Johnson said Iowa has different weather patterns each year.

“Some years you might go through what you might call a normal year, which there really is no such thing in Iowa,” Johnson said. “Our normal is kind of a compilation of extremes sometimes.”

The one thing that has changed in the years of meteorology is technology. With newer equipment available, meteorologists are now able to make better predictions.

“Weather forecasting has changed dramatically since World War II, not only in terms of technology and gathering data, but also in terms of how it's processed with the computerization,” Johnson said.

Johnson lives in Cedar Falls but was not personally affected by either the flooding or tornados.
